The Post and Beam Method

Top

TimbeRoof Post and Beam artisans, specially trained in post and beam construction, create our timber frame components in a climate-controlled factory in Waynesboro, VA. Both post-and-beam and timber framing are centuries-old construction methods that combine great flexibility of design with the warm and natural beauty of exposed timbers. Because the method is so adaptable, frames can be built to fit almost any design. Once the frames are completed, they can be immediately shipped out to the client’s construction site for quick and easy assembly.

The advantages of timber framing are endless when compared to stick built homes, the most common method used in residential home building today. In stick framing, small pieces of wood are used, insulation is placed between these sticks (or studs), and then everything is covered with drywall or paneling. The craftsmanship of the carpenters and the wood itself are sadly hidden.

In post-and-beam construction, larger pieces of wood (we typically use 6"x8" and 6"x12" timbers) are handcrafted to fit together and are exposed to view. To create the shell of the structure, the outer wood paneling is placed on top of the beams and the insulation wraps the roof, creating a more airtight seal and an indisputably more impressive appearance.

“The day the roof system was built was such a thrill! We arrived on-site to see huge pine beams, hand-crafted by TimbeRoof, arching into the sky. We could see then that our house would be sturdy and strong as well as beautiful.”

An Environmental Approach

Top

Behind the rustic charm of a TimbeRoof Post and Beam house lies some of the latest developments in homebuilding, designed to respond to 21st century concerns over energy efficiency and preservation of the environment. Though we can and have used almost every wood under the sun, TimbeRoof usually uses eastern white pine and Douglas fir, species of wood that grow mostly straight, minimizing the waste when creating timbers. They are also fast growing and can be more-easily replenished.

Our method of assembly and storage also makes efficient use of natural resources. Unlike onsite construction, where frames risk damage due to exposure to the weather, we assemble ours in a climate-controlled factory. We also maintain a varied inventory, reducing the likelihood of having to waste wood due to special cuts of timber. This also eliminates the wasteful cutting and trimming of larger pieces into smaller ones.

TimbeRoof’s concern for the environment does not end with the construction process. To lower the consumption of heating energy, TimbeRoof recommends the use of insulated panels (SIP panels) to create highly energy-efficient roofs and outer walls. With today's increasing energy prices, this is an ever-growing concern to all. As an added bonus to our customers purchasing a complete ‘shell’ package, we include a case of energy-saving, compact fluorescent light bulbs as a gift. Though it is a small step, it is another way we can help save our environment.

TimbeRoof Post and Beam has proudly teamed up with The Arbor Day Foundation™ to help preserve our environment. When we complete a project, we will make a donation to the Foundation in our customer’s name that will, incredibly, protect 25,000 square feet of fragile and vital tropical rainforest. This is just another way we try to be responsible stewards of the planet’s resources and preserve her resources for future generations.

Our Commitment to Quality and Satisfaction

Top

TimbeRoof Post and Beam is committed to creating homes of the highest quality, backed by years of experience. We truly live the adage "Do one thing and do it right". Because we specialize solely in timber frame building and design, we have a much greater choice of suppliers than firms that do “everything under one roof”. This gives us the flexibility to choose only the finest materials when building for our clients.

In addition, our large inventory and sourcing options protect us from sudden increases in costs associated with transportation, the price of wood or of other building materials. When a client receives an estimate from us, it is with the assurance that it will be the final cost of the project. It is guaranteed for 90 days since we feel that, when we give you a price, we should stick to it. Our unique 'Price Lock Guarantee' is also available to our customers that want to lock in pricing for projects that fall outside of the 90-day window. This is especially helpful for those waiting to sell one house before being able to start on their next home project.

Method of Construction

Top

Construction of a TimbeRoof home begins in our climate-controlled factory, where cut timbers arrive from one of our numerous partner mills. Our team of post-and-beam specialists then size the timbers to the exact length required, cut the mortises and tenons and create all of the joints and angles. Once the cutting and notching are complete, the timbers are sanded and then our client’s choice of stain is applied to all of the wood involved in the project. The posts and beams are then tested for fit and ease of assembly to eliminate potential problems on the building site. Only after top quality is assured does the whole package get shipped to the erection site.

At the building site, after the timber frame and framed walls (SIPs or stud) go up, the factory-stained paneling is installed. When completed in this order, the tongue-and-groove placement on top of the rafters is, on average, five times faster than in conventional stick-built construction. The last step is installing the insulated roof panels on top of the T&G sections. In this manner, an entire home can be under roof with a finished ceiling in just a few days instead of the weeks required by conventional techniques. In order to assure our customers that the process runs flawlessly, TimbeRoof always sends a representative from our factory to oversee erection of the timber frame shell, regardless of the location. Who else in the industry provides such peace of mind?

“The TimbeRoof system allowed us the flexibility of design, volume of space, expanses of window-walls, sturdy, hand-crafted construction and a hands-on teamwork approach that made building our home such a joy.”
